The Crescent Hill Standby Generator Project involved constructing a new electrical building to house three 2500 kW diesel generators, a 15 kV switchgear, and related systems, including HVAC, plumbing, instrumentation, controls, wiring, and conduit. Three 12,000-gallon aboveground diesel fuel tanks were installed, complete with double-wall piping and leak detection and monitoring systems. A new access road and exit onto Frankfort Avenue were built, along with a new signal light installed. All equipment underwent thorough performance testing. The project also included concrete, structural, and metal work for the generator building, utility relocations, and extensive site preparation, with continuous security and compliance monitoring throughout.
The Crescent Hill Standby Generator Project significantly enhances Louisville Water’s emergency preparedness and operational reliability. With modern generators installed, uninterrupted water production is ensured during power outages or emergencies. The plant, serving nearly 1 million customers daily, now has a reliable backup power solution, reducing dependence on the aging LG&E gas turbine generator which was at risk of decommissioning. The generators not only minimize service disruptions but are designed to operate quietly, producing noise levels comparable to everyday urban environments.
